Let’s Do The Time Warp At New Wimbledon Theatre
Get ready to time warp again at the New Wimbledon Theatre this week! Richard O’Brien’s Rocky Horror Show has arrived in London as part of its UK and Ireland tour.
Jason Donovan as Frank
It’s a cult classic, but in case you’re unfamiliar with its weird and wonderful tale, here’s a quick rundown: Brad and Janet are clean-cut American sweethearts who have just gotten engaged. On their way to visit their old friend Dr. Scott, their car gets a flat tire late at night in the middle of nowhere. Forced to seek help, they stumble upon the eerie castle of Dr. Frank-N-Furter, an energetic and eccentric transvestite scientist who invites them to stay the night and witness his groundbreaking experiment, the creation of the perfect man.
Will Brad and Janet make it out with their sanity and their virtues intact?

Jason Donovan leads the cast as Frank-N-Furter. Having recently seen his performance in the role at the Dominion Theatre, to see him again was met with high anticipation, and the performance did not disappoint. Donovan transforms into the flamboyant and commanding Frank with remarkable ease. One audience member, unfamiliar with the show, even asked at intermission when Jason would appear on stage, a true testament to his ability to fully embody the character.

The straight-laced couple were played on this night by swings Alex Hetherington (Brad) and Stacey Monahan (Janet). Both delivered high-energy, suitably exaggerated performances that captured the spirit of their characters.
A standout performance came from Natasha Hoeberigs, who effortlessly shifts between the roles of Usherette and Magenta. As the Usherette, she brings a vivacious, playful energy, serving as the audience’s lively and cheeky entrance into the world of Rocky Horror. Then, with a seamless transformation, she becomes Magenta, dark, sensual, and mysterious, adding a thrilling edge to the production. This striking contrast highlights her impressive versatility and command of the stage.

The set design by Hugh Durrant is layered and keeps the stage visually exciting throughout. The show opens with the Usherette pulling back a curtain to reveal a colourful, pantomime-esque set depicting Brad and Janet at the chapel, their car, and the castle exterior. As the show progresses, the stage opens further to reveal a darker semi-circular base set with multiple entrances and exits representing the castle’s many doors. Revolving flaps transform the space smoothly from the foyer and living area to Frank’s lab, where the muscled Rocky (Morgan Jackson) is created, enabling quick and seamless scene changes that keep the show’s energetic pace intact.

Borderline pantomime, adult pantomime really, the show’s legacy includes a highly interactive script, with audience participation firmly embedded in its DNA. This unique relationship between performers and viewers creates a one-of-a-kind experience that keeps Rocky Horror thrilling and fresh no matter how many times it is seen. Nathan Caton brought quick-fire wit to The Narrator, expertly responding to audience call-backs. His lively connection with the sign language interpreter on the night led to some hilarious interactions.

The only potential downside for newcomers is the limited dialogue and minimal explanations, which may leave some viewers feeling confused, especially without prior knowledge of the film, which provides greater clarity to the story. They might also miss the audience call-backs that are a big part of the experience. Sometimes it can be hard to hear what the audience is saying, so only half the joke comes through when characters on stage respond. Familiarity with the film or the show’s history greatly enhances understanding and enjoyment, but for those experiencing it completely blind, the show can be more challenging to follow and may not be fully appreciated for what it is.

The music of this show is iconic for good reason. Its rock and roll sound is captivating and infectious, inspiring many audience members to join in, especially during the infamous “Time Warp.” “Sweet Transvestite” is also an audience favourite, especially as it coincides with Jason Donovan’s entrance. It is no surprise that the curtain call features both songs, and the audience gives a standing ovation.
The cast of Rocky Horror
The musical confidently conveys its message of love, self-expression, sexual liberation, gender fluidity, and celebrating individuality. If a campy, satirical party musical is what you are after, look no further. Rocky Horror is cemented in the musical theatre hall of fame for a reason, and it is not going anywhere…except around the UK and Ireland until July 2026.
